Duffey Lake resort opening day Nov 9....
There's nothing quite like the anticipation of the first real turns of the year. The week leading up to it usually involves tweaking and adjusting new gear and unhealthy amounts of checking the weather and snow conditions. The key in the South Coast of B.C. is to find a zone where driving high enough is possible to minimize the "mission factor" and to find a spot where no one else would think to go. Lucky for us this all worked out on Saturday.
A trip up highway 99's Duffey Lake Road and 12kms in deepish offroad snow and we parked our sleds....
First skin up up of the season....
We spent the next few hours navigating our way to the alpine....
We checked into guest services at the lodge and headed out for a late afternoon shred in the greybird weather conditions....
I've been trying to get in good with "Gambrinus the beer god" so I packed a full growler for the evenings social events. He would be pleased.
It was a spectacular night in paradise....
The next morning we followed our previous days zipper track into the alpine....
We tried to tell Juneau it was easier in the back but she wanted the fitness....
Droppin in....
And no week-end in this zone would be complete without a rip into the "Shitter Shute". A few more snows and it will be "Game on"!
Squamish River valley snow hunting....
Just like clockwork the first week-end of November brought a healthy dump of snow into the hills above Squamish. We headed out early Sunday morning with Juneau to hike into one of our favourite valleys just above town.
One last big ride before the snows....
A couple of week-ends ago we spent Saturday wandering up a less traveled route up Mt. Garibaldi. The fall colours and a spectacular view of Squamish made for a great day out.
Sunday we headed south to Britannia and dove into the loam on one of the last sunny dry days of the year....

Below Pemberton, above Squamish and near that other valley....
Saturday Danielle tempted the "October Alpine riding gods" with a 8 hour epic above 1900m. Three weeks ago I saw an internet post of someone getting early season face shots in this spot. The weather was way too good not try so we headed north and set off up valley.
The long old road bed pedal was "fall colour" scenic....
Once we emerged into the alpine the snow hindered our progress but only a bit....
Rainbow Mountain goodness....
Maybe should have brought some skins?
We were here only 2.5 months earlier....
I found an RMK A-arm that had the potential of turning my Sight into a snow bike!
Killer Castle Towers views....
Running around and digging holes all day makes you look like an idiot!
The iconic Black tusk and Mt. Garibaldi to it's left.
Looking back at the Tantalus Range towering over Squamish....
The snow is certainly creeping down Whistler Mountain....
Mmmm.... Wedge.
See you next year....
